Where Is Madawaska, Ontario?


Madawaska, Ontario, is a small community located within South Algonquin Township in the Nipissing District – home of the South Algonquin Business Alliance (SABA)


Nestled on the south-eastern edge of Algonquin Provincial Park, Madawaska is surrounded by pristine wilderness, making it a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts. It sits at the junction of Highway 60 and Highway 523, making it easily accessible from larger hubs like Barry’s Bay, Bancroft and Whitney, Ontario.

While Madawaska Ontario is a distinct village located within the Township of South Algonquin, it’s often associated with the Township of Madawaska Valley – a separate township just east of the village of Madawaska. 


Madawaska Valley encompasses several towns and villages, including Barry’s Bay, Combermere, and Wilno. South Algonquin and Madawaska Valley are both known for picturesque landscapes, rolling hills, and proximity to the Madawaska River. Summers are warm, with temperatures averaging 20-25°C, making it ideal for hiking, canoeing, and other outdoor activities. Explore the South Algonquin Trails


Madawaska is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering access to various trails for all skill levels. Madawaska is one of South Algonquin’s two villages, home to many types of trails, including: 


  • Hiking Trails: Algonquin Park’s east gate is a short drive away, giving you access to trails like the Booth’s Rock Trail and Bat Lake Trail. Within South Algonquin, local trails such as the (recently renovated) Old Rail Trail are perfect for hiking and biking - not to mention snow shoeing, skiing, and snowmobiling. You can access the Old Rail Trail from the Madawaska Recreation Complex, travelling both east and west.

  • Longer Trails: You can also trek on over 50km of trails in the Spectacle Lake-Bear-Burnett’s Mountain (SLBM) system with breathtaking views of the hills and valleys. Be prepared to bring your own equipment for any kind of winter sports, and to enjoy a workout as the trails may not be groomed specifically for your sport. 

  • Snowmobile Trails: The region boasts an extensive network of snowmobile trails maintained by clubs like the Opeongo Snowbirds and  Madawaska Smowmobile Club of the Greater Madawaska Area. Madawaska’s location near Algonquin Park makes it a prime spot for winter sports enthusiasts. The Old Rail trail in South Algonquin, part of the Round Algonquin Park (RAP) tour,  is a popular snowmobile route in the winter.

  • Skiing Trails: Visit Fen Lake, Minnesing, and the Old Rail Trail in Algonquin Park for your recreational skiing adventures! Take a close look at the Leaf Lake Trail – a world-class cross country trail that would be perfect for your next winter trip.

Water Activities

The Madawaska River is perfect for paddling and fishing. Kayakers and canoeists will appreciate the calm waters and scenic views, while anglers can try their luck catching bass, trout, and pike.


Madawaska has two beaches to explore in the summer months, or for shoreline lake walking when the weather gets cold enough. Explore JR Booth Park, as well as the Mick Murray Millennium Park if you’re looking for a beach to visit. There are playgrounds nearby for the kids! 


Bark Lake is a managed lake in the area, which means that the water levels are controlled. Each fall, the water levels are dropped, and each spring they’re raised again, providing summer swimming, fishing and boating opportunities and a fantastic view year-round!

Winter Activities

Madawaska is situated just minutes from Algonquin Provincial Park - and during the winter months, it’s a perfect winter wonderland for cool-weather lovers!


From the beginning of November to the end of March, Madawaska is full of winter activities. Many snow covered trails, small cliffs for ice climbing, and frozen bodies of water for ice fishing. Ice fishing huts are available for rent at Spectacle Lake Lodge. Conveniently close to amenities, warm meals, and hot beverages at nearby cafes, this is an ideal place to take a winter vacation in Ontario. 


You can explore renting equipment and trail maps as Four Seasons Algonquin Cabins guests! With the Algonquin Trail settled right behind the cabins, you can park your snowmobile trailer when you stay at one of these cabins and hit the trails without trouble!

We have to start with Four Seasons Algonquin Cabins – because it’s right in Madawaska! Located at the central intersection, you don’t have to look hard to find these quiet, private cabins tucked away in Madawaska and only 15 minutes from Algonquin Park.


These cabins come complete with outdoor fire pits, cozy bedrooms, a private and personal kitchen, and indoor sitting space. You can truly make these cabins your home away from home, whether you’re visiting for one night or many; with the kids or on your own! 


Four Seasons Algonquin Cabins are located within walking distance to the Madawaska amenities mentioned above: convenience store snacks and light groceries and an LCBO outlet.  


If you’re staying for multiple days, you can also take a quick drive down the Highway 60 corridor to the Whitney Freshmart, online – a full grocery store available for all your cooking needs!

Last but certainly not least, we recommend the Riverside Rooms at the Mad Musher. The Musher is at its core a delectable lunch and dinner experience – we’re talking casual, home-cooked comfort food that we really can’t get enough of. Great food, tasty beverages (adult or otherwise), and the bonus of a couple of Riverside Rooms!


These rooms consist of four private bedrooms, plus shared washrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and a TV room – all at the doorstep of the Madawaska River! 


The big bonus here is that the Mad Musher is also home of South Algonquin local, Steve Dunsford of Impressions of Algonquin gallery.
